As opposed to other providers who offer several protocols, Avast VPN only offers one: OpenVPN over UDP with AES-256 encryption. This is a powerful encryption method, and is utilized by banks. Avast also employs different encryption technologies like ChaCha20 or RSA-2048.
The Avast VPN client on desktops and Android devices will automatically choose the best protocol for your connection. It attempts to connect to OpenVPN first, and switches to Mimic in the event that it is not successful. From my experience, this is not the most efficient way of selecting a particular protocol. It would be more beneficial to offer the user the option to choose a protocol that they prefer and inform you how successful it has been.
Avast VPN is a VPN with a lot of servers. It has 700+ locations across over 34 countries. However I’m not sure if the list is updated often enough considering that the VPN did not have any servers in China during my tests. Avast gathers information regarding your usage, including your full name and zip code.
Avast is headquartered in the Czech Republic, which is GDPR-compliant and is not affiliated to any of the Eyes Alliance surveillance groups. The company keeps connection logs which identify users and the “no-logs” policy does not prohibit this. They accept payment through PayPal and credit cards but do not collect billing data. They also permit cookies to track your online activity.
